Ask a Dentist

Q: If my child has canker sore on their tongue, should I take them to see the dentist?

A child with a runny nose is crying.

Although most canker sores will heal on their own after a couple of weeks, it is not a bad idea to have a persisting sore checked out by your dentist or doctor. Often sores will appear in people who are stressed, consuming too much acidity (like drinking too much orange juice!), have braces, have allergies, or are not receiving enough vitamins.

If you are trying to get rid of the sore on your own we recommend avoiding acidic foods or drinks, not touching the sore (avoid the area when brushing your teeth), and rinsing your mouth with warm salt water.

Schedule an appointment at either of Winnipeg dental offices to have persistent sores checked out.
