Q: Is there a way to whiten your teeth without a professional system? Are there natural ways to do it? Ask a dentist
A: While an at home solution won’t provide the same results as a professional system, it can improve the whiteness of your teeth.
Purchase baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. Both items can be found at local pharmacies and supermarkets. Make sure that the peroxide you buy is a 3% solution. Anything stronger is not safe for use in your mouth. Using your favourite toothpaste, add a little baking soda, a splash of hydrogen peroxide, and a little water. Just mix these everyday items together to make a soft paste and apply.
These two ingredients, while safe for use in the mouth, are potentially abrasive and can break down your tooth enamel over time. To prevent this, be sure to use this method no more than 2 times per week and brush very gently when you do. Once you reach your target shade of white for your teeth, it is best to try using this remedy one one too two times a month as a maintenance step to keep your teeth white.
You can also use baking soda and lemon paste as an easy and natural technique. Mix several teaspoons of baking soda with enough lemon juice to make a paste.
The alkaline baking soda will help balance the acidity in your mouth while the lemon works as a natural bleach. Lemon juice is very acidic and should not be left on the teeth for long periods of time or applied directly to the teeth. When used with the baking soda, lemon juice is safe to use as the acidity levels are decreased to a safe level. You can always substitute lemon with water on some days, so your teeth aren’t subjected to the bleaching factor so often.
