Q: Are pacifiers bad for babies' teeth?

A baby with a blue pacifier pulls a blanket over their head.

Pacifiers can be beneficial for some babies because they help to soothe through anxiety and stressful situations - but there is the risk of dental problems if your child uses their pacifier too aggressively or for too long. This can mean changes in the shape of the roof of the mouth, improper tooth growth, a misaligned bite and moving or shifting teeth.

Pacifier users are also more likely to suffer from middle ear infections or develop speech problems. We recommend that any child should be weaned off of their pacifier by age 2 or earlier to avoid any complications. The greatest negative effects are usually seen on children who continue to use their pacifier up to age four.

It is also important to note that thumb or finger sucking can also have the same negative effects as prolonged pacifier use.
