Q: Why do I hate the taste of toothpaste?

A man holds his mouth in discomfort.

Dislike for the taste of toothpaste is not uncommon. It’s possible you’re reacting to the mint-flavouring or to the SLS ingredient. Try a different flavour, non-flavoured varieties or kids toothpaste. Going without toothpaste, or using methods not recommended by one of our Winnipeg dentists (and certified by the Canadian Dental Association) comes with its risks.

Fear of the dentist is understandable and not uncommon either. If you haven’t visited the dentist because of your fear, you’re taking the right steps by contacting us. Talk to your dentist about laughing gas (or Nitrous Oxide treatment), which puts you at ease for your dental visit. With nitrous oxide treatment, you won’t feel the discomfort or fear you had going into the appointment.

Based on how long you’ve gone without treatment, your dentist may need to do more than a routine cleaning. Five years without proper brushing or dental care puts you at risk for cavities, infections, or other issues.

Make sure you’re flossing once a day as well. Food particles stuck in teeth begin to turn into plaque after 24 hours. Try plastic floss picks if the string floss is uncomfortable for you.

Your cheek pain might come from a headache, sinus infection, abscessed tooth infection, joint disorder, or virus. You won’t know for sure until you get your dental health checked by a professional.
