Q: Is Green Tea Good For You?

Calling all tea lovers: here are more reasons to enjoy a nice, warm cup of green tea. It’s great for your teeth! Green tea is a great source of antioxidants and high in polyphenols. These keep your tooth enamel healthy and protect against erosion and decay, according to the University of Rochester.

If you haven’t tried green tea, consider adding it to your daily routine. There are many options to choose from, like matcha, mint and jasmine. So, how does green tea promote healthy teeth and gums?

Controls Inflammation

Green tea’s anti-inflammatory properties can be used to help control gum disease. An Indian study suggests green tea promotes periodontal (gum) health by reducing inflammation, preventing bone resorption and limiting the growth of certain bacteria associated with periodontal diseases.

Reduces Cavities

It controls bacteria and lowers the acidity of your saliva, which can help prevent cavities. A journal from Europe PubMed Central notes those who drink green tea regularly have less tooth decay. If you add honey, sugar or lemon to your tea, drink a glass of water afterward to rinse the sugars and acids away.

Freshens Your Breath

Green tea contains polyphenols that kill the microbes causing bad breath. Some oral care products containing tea polyphenols are toothpaste, mouthwash, chewing gum and mouth spray. The University of British Columbia states green tea powder can even neutralize bad breath better than chewing gum, mints or natural alternatives like fresh herbs.

Winter is the perfect time to enjoy hot drinks, so choose one that will boost your dental health. If you’ve never tried green tea, give it a chance for a brighter smile. But remember, it’s not a replacement for regular brushing, flossing and professional dental care.
