Q: Why is it a problem to have an overbite?

An overbite happens when the upper jaw overlaps the lower jaw. It’s common for people to have a slight overbite of a couple of millimeters. An overbite is commonly caused by genetics which dictates the shape and size of your jaw or teeth. But there are bad habits that can contribute to the problem too. Chronic thumb sucking can push the lower teeth back and pull the upper teeth and jawbone forward.

Severe overbites, if not treated, can cause serious problems including headaches, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and uneven wear on the teeth. An overbite can even make it harder to keep your teeth and gums clean. Left unchecked, an overbite can worsen over time, and because of the extra teeth clenching and grinding it can produce, it will become more pronounced too.

Because of these issues, getting treatment at an early age is important. Early treatment can prevent further health complications and possible facial surgery. An overbite is corrected using orthodontics, such as Invisalign, which has grown to be a popular treatment in Winnipeg. Our dental clinics use Invisalign. Your dentist will work with you to develop a treatment plan that slowly moves your teeth, jawline or both to be more in line with where the bite should be. When an overbite is too severe for orthodontics to fix alone, corrective facial surgery on the jaw may be the next step.

Correcting an overbite can reduce teeth grinding, jaw pain and improve confidence by giving you a straighter bite and smile.
