Q: Why are the gums on my upper mouth so painful to floss?

It’s important to rule out serious issues before making assumptions, so we advise that you make an appointment as soon as you can for us to look at what might be causing pain in your gums.

Gum disease (also known as periodontal disease) is a chronic infection that is most often caused by plaque buildup. Over time, the plaque hardens into tartar and causes the gums to become inflamed. If left untreated, the inflammation can develop into a serious infection that attacks the bone supporting the teeth and causes the gum tissue to shrink. In serious cases it can lead to pneumonia, chronic respiratory disease, heart disease and stroke.

It’s easily preventable by keeping up a regular oral health routine. This means brushing and flossing twice a day and visiting your dentist once every six months for a cleaning and checkup.

However, these is a chance that what you’re experiencing is the flu or a sinus infection. Your sinuses are directly above your top row of teeth and gums and when they are inflamed they can press into the area and cause pain.

Schedule an appointment with our St. Vital or Garden City dentists today for a proper examination.
