The systems that keep our bodies healthy and functional are all interconnected, and there is increasing evidence to suggest that oral health is one of the most important components to maintaining overall health. So, what happens when you’re suffering from an oral health issue like gum disease? Can poor oral health contribute to problems elsewhere in your body?
It’s not conclusive, but some studies suggest that your head and heart may be connected by something you might not expect – germs. Periodontitis (more commonly known as gum disease) is an infection caused by harmful bacteria. Using your bloodstream, harmful bacteria can easily spread from your mouth to the rest of your body, eventually finding their way to your heart.
But it’s not necessarily the bacteria themselves that cause the problem – it’s actually the inflammation that occurs when your immune system attempts to fight them off. Once harmful bacteria reach your heart, the resulting swelling can result in potentially life-threatening conditions like endocarditis (inflammation of the heart’s lining) or atherosclerosis (a hardening of the heart’s arteries from plaque buildup and inflammation).
While studies have linked poor oral health and heart disease, the jury is still out on whether heart disease can be directly caused by periodontitis or if the two are both symptoms of a third, related health risk like smoking.
Either way, patients with gingivitis or other advanced periodontal disease are at the highest risk, especially if their gum disease is undiagnosed and untreated. That’s why it’s important to self-screen for gum disease in between your regular dental appointments. According to the Canadian Dental Association, signs of gum disease are:
