Feeling self-conscious about the shade of your teeth is extremely normal. In fact, many dentists report that more patients ask about tooth discolouration than any other cosmetic dentistry concern. We all know that some people’s teeth are yellower than others, but do you know what factors determine tooth shade (and what you can do about the colour of your teeth?)
To set the record straight, tooth discolouration isn’t always something you can completely control. In fact, genetics play a significant part in what shade your teeth will naturally be (which means that yes, yellow teeth can run in the family). Tooth discolouration is caused in part by dentin, the thick, yellow-ish layer underneath your teeth’s protective enamel shells. Dentin is naturally a yellowish-brownish colour (though the exact colour is also affected by genetics). Thinner enamel, whether caused genetically, by aging, through erosion or by physical wear and tear, can lead to dentin being more visible, which in turn makes teeth appear more yellow.
Tooth discolouration can also come from external factors. These include eating dark-coloured foods like berries, curries and soy sauce, drinking staining beverages like coffee, tea or red wine, and smoking. Excessive consumption of any (or all) of these may stain the surface of your teeth, leaving them looking yellow or brown. Additionally, some medications and cancer treatments can discolour teeth as well.
Fortunately, when it comes to external tooth discolouration, we have many treatments that can help, including Phillips Zoom! Whitening. Available at both our St. Vital Centre and Garden City Shopping Centre locations, Zoom! Whitening works through the application of light-activated whitening gel, which enters tooth tissues and lightens discolouration quickly and harmlessly. We also offer custom take-home trays which can be used with dental grade whitening gel. It is an effective way to brighten your smile at home! If you’re wondering if whitening is right for you, book an appointment with us today using the orange “Book Online” button to discuss it with your dentist!
