While diastema more commonly occurs in children before they get their permanent teeth, it’s fairly common for adults as well.  

Diastema can be attributed to a number of causes, including tooth angle, a discrepancy in bone size, an extra tooth (known as mesiodens) or even gum disease. While diastema isn’t a medical concern and doesn’t require treatment in and of itself, many people feel self-conscious about their gap and wish they could fix it. Dental bonding is a cosmetic dental procedure where a composite resin matching the colour of your tooth is applied to repair and enhance natural teeth. To prepare for a dental bonding, your dentist will gently etch the tooth’s (or teeth’s) surface with a specialized liquid before the bonding resin is placed on the tooth and molded to the correct shape. This allows for greater adhesion. Then, a special light is used to harden the resin before it’s polished and shaped to ensure a seamless blend.  

Once bonded, the materials can last up to 10 years before needing to be replaced.
