Ask a Dentist

Q: Why are my gums receding as I get older?

A dental patient sits in a dental chair between two dentists at a Dental Image Therapy Centre location.

Recession in your gums is normal as you grow older, however it is something you should pay close attention to and talk to your dentist about. When your gums recede they can create pockets for bacteria to build-up in, which could lead to cavities, gum disease or other issues. If left untreated, gum recession can damage the tissues and bone structure surrounding your teeth, leading to tooth loss.

Tooth sensitivity is the most common sign of gum recession, and is the point when most people begin to notice their gums and further down their teeth than they used to be.

When deciding on treatment, it is important to first determine the cause:

● Periodontal diseases (gum disease): This is the #1 cause for gum recession

● Your genes: In some cases you may just be more susceptible to gum disease, and in turn gum recession.

● Aggressive tooth brushing: Brushing your teeth with too much force, or brushing side to side against your gums can be damaging. It can cause the enamel on your teeth to wear down and your gums to recede.

● Poor dental care: If you are not brushing and flossing daily you are giving bacteria the opportunity to build up and turn into tartar, leading to gum recession.

● Tobacco products: Smoking and chewing tobacco encourages bacteria to stick to your teeth and turn into tartar, leading to gum recession.

● Grinding and clenching your teeth: Clenching or grinding your teeth can put too much force on the teeth, causing gums to recede.

● Crooked teeth or a misaligned bite: When teeth do not come together evenly, too much force can be placed on the gums and bone, allowing gums to recede.
