Do I need an apron when I get x-rays?

It’s been standard procedure for over 70 years in Manitoba for dental patients to wear protective shielding, like a lead apron, during x-rays. At one time, these aprons were an important part of keeping patients safe and protected against harmful radiation. But technology has come a long way in the last 70 years, as has our understanding of the risks associated with low-level radiation, and with these advances come new recommendations and guidelines for dental professionals to follow.

So, what does that mean for the use of shielding aprons? Well, starting with the American Dental Association in early 2024, medical and health associations around the world have revisited their guidelines regarding lead aprons and many, including the Manitoba Dental Association and Shared Health, have softened their recommendations. According to these new guidelines, patients will no longer be required to wear protective aprons during routine dental x-rays.

You might be wondering what changes lead to these relaxed recommendations. After all, isn’t it important to protect ourselves against potentially harmful radiation? According to Shared Health, while low-level radiation given off by x-rays was once thought to carry a risk of passing on genetic issues to children, there has been no evidence that such a concern is valid. On top of that, “advances in medical imaging technology... have reduced the radiation dose per exam by approximately 95%.” In fact, protective aprons are more likely to cause x-ray issues, blocking them from capturing necessary images and forcing retakes that increase a patient’s overall radiation exposure.

That said, if a patient is more comfortable wearing an apron when getting x-rays taken, that isn’t a problem – our clinics will still have them available upon request for those who are uncomfortable with the idea of taking unshielded x-rays. However, you can rest assured that here at Dental Image Therapy Centres we are committed to staying up to date with the most current guidelines and recommendations for both patient safety and comfort.
