Q: Do I Need Dentures?

Some people might need to consider dentures at one point in their life. But dentures are not inevitable for everyone. There are many actions you can take now to prevent the need for dentures. It begins with visiting your dentist for a checkup and cleaning every six months. It’s also wise to go to the dentist to evaluate the need for dentures.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures replace missing or lost teeth. Depending on the severity of the tooth loss, you may be fitted with a full or partial set of dentures. Once you’ve been fitted, it may feel strange in your mouth. While dentures do take some time to get used to, rest assured that today’s dentures are natural-looking and more comfortable than ever.

How Do Dentures Work?

Full dentures are made of plastic and are meant to replace all your teeth on the upper or lower jaw. The upper base covers the roof of the mouth, while the lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe to accommodate the tongue. Your dentist will take an impression of your mouth to ensure the dentures are custom-made to fit your mouth.

Partial dentures replace several teeth. They are typically replacement teeth connected to a plastic base that looks like your gums.

A dental professional will examine your teeth and jaw to determine which kind of dentures you’ll need. Alternatively, dental implants may be an option for you. They replace damaged or missing teeth with artificial ones. Reach out to your dentist if dental implants interest you.

How Long Do Dentures Last?

Over time, the denture you wear will need to be relined, remade or rebased (making a new base while keeping the existing dental teeth). As well, your mouth naturally changes as you age. The changes can cause your dentures to loosen, which can irritate your gums and make chewing difficult. Always consult your dentist when your denture doesn’t feel comfortable in the mouth.
