Dental health is a lifelong journey.
For Dr. Stella Korowski, her dental health journey started later than when we would recommend. She didn’t start going to the dentist until she was around nine years old. And what we recommend is that babies be taken to the dentist as early as when their first tooth erupts.
“I was so nervous. To this day, I remember being so scared and self-conscious of my teeth. I was really fortunate to have a fantastic dentist who I still see up to now. He did everything he could to make me feel at ease. He explained what each instrument was for and explained the whole procedure to me. It was an interesting experience. Even though I was so anxious, it developed this excitement and wanting to go see my dentist again,” says Dr. Korowski.
This first visit to the dentist was the start of Dr. Korowski’s passion for dentistry and healthcare. Fast forward to many years later, she joined Dental Image Therapy Centre at Garden City as one of our amazing dentists. We are proud to say that she is an incredible asset to our team. Her bright, kind, calming and welcoming presence always brings a smile to everyone in our clinic.
Young Stella continued going to regular dentist check-ups and treatment, and even got braces. Her positive experience with her dentist and orthodontist made her want to pursue a dentistry career from a young age.
“When I was in the seventh grade, we did a science fair project, and I did mine on ‘Which beverage stains your teeth the most?’,” she said between laughs. “It was very scientific for a seventh-grader. My research may not be the most accurate, but at a young age I was already very interested in that field.”
She started shadowing her dentist and orthodontist in high school, which solidified her interest in the dental field. She knew she wanted to be in healthcare, and with her great experience at the dental office as a child, there was no question. It was an easy pick.
Stella received a bachelor of science degree in Microbiology from the University of Manitoba followed by four years at U of M’s College of Dentistry. She continuously strives to improve her skills and knowledge by joining different committees - she recently joined the Manitoba Dental Association’s General Practice Study Club.
“I am also a part of the Manitoba Dental Foundation. We support causes that improve the dental health of the underserved communities in Manitoba. This foundation also works for other philanthropy and fundraising causes in the community.”
Stella is a part-time instructor at U of M’s College of Dentistry, where she teaches endodontics (root canal therapy), dental crowns and bridges.
When Dr. Korowski is not out and about improving her patient’s smiles, she loves watching and playing sports. She is a big fan of the Winnipeg Jets. And can show you a few golf tricks. Stella loves reading books, baking, long-distance running (but not during the winter!) and listening to music.
“My favourite part of being a dentist is helping people and making them feel confident about their smiles. This goes back to why I wanted to be in healthcare to begin with. I want to share with others the same experience I had with my dentist and orthodontist growing up. They made me feel confident and comfortable in my skin. I want others to feel the same way.”
With Stella’s passion for helping people, she recently joined the group of dentists who will administer COVID-19 vaccines.
“When the pandemic first hit us and everything shut down, those were times when I questioned my place in healthcare. I wanted to help as a healthcare practitioner, but there wasn’t a way to do so. When there was a need and they reached out to dentists, I sent an application in right away.”
