Q: Is there such a thing as too much brushing?

An assortment of toothbrushes in a toothbrush holder.

Unfortunately, there is such a thing as too much brushing, and it can lead to serious oral health issues. Aggressive brushing or scrubbing side to side can lead to sensitive teeth, gum recession (exposing the sensitive root area,) and worn down enamel.

Gentle brushing with an extra soft toothbrush can prevent trauma to the gums and teeth. We recommend you brush (and floss!) twice a day – when you wake up and before bed – to maintain optimal oral health.

Our dentists at our St. Vital Centre or Garden City Shopping Centre locations would be happy to check your teeth if you're worried about over-brushing. Book your next appointment here to review your brushing habits!
