Q: What is the best kind of toothbrush to use?

A red toothbrush with white bristles

In most cases, the kind of toothbrush we send home with you every six months is ideal. That is one with soft bristles of varying lengths that can reach around and between your teeth. We recommend replacing your toothbrush once every three months – so you should be buying one new toothbrush halfway between each visit.

When you are shopping for a toothbrush, remember to look for one with soft bristles because these are best for removing plaque and debris along the gum line.  They can bend and flex into those hard-to-reach places.

Electric toothbrushes also help remove debris and plaque because they are designed to distribute the right pressure and rotate bristles between the teeth. Electric toothbrushes work well for people with recession because they help to encourage less aggressive brushing.
