Q: Which dental fillings are the best?

Amalgam fillings on two back teeth. Amalgam fillings are inexpensive, last long, take one appointment to do, but have an unnatural colour.

Your Winnipeg dentist will recommend a certain type of filling based on a few considerations: dental health history, allergies, cost of treatment, tooth location and repairs needed. There is no right answer for everyone. Each type of filling comes with its pros and cons, which you may discuss with your dentist. There are five common fillings you may hear about - composite, glass ionomer, porcelain, amalgam, and cast gold:

  • Composite and glass ionomer fillings match your natural teeth colour, typically take one appointment to do, cost less than gold, but are not as strong as other fillings.
  • Porcelain fillings match your natural teeth colour, last a long time, but are not good on molars, need two appointments to do, and cost more.
  • Amalgam fillings are inexpensive, last long, take one appointment to do, but have an unnatural colour.
  • Cast gold fillings are stronger than amalgam, long-lasting, but cost more, take two appointments to do, and have an unnatural look.

Remember, your dentist makes recommendations intending to protect you, your teeth, overall health and peace of mind.If you think you need a filling and don't have a dentist, give us a call. We're always accepting new patients.
