Q: Why is my tongue burning all the time?

A man holds his jaw with a look of discomfort on his face.

Does it feel as though you’ve sipped scalding hot coffee? You may have burning mouth syndrome. There are several complex possible causes for your discomfort: dry mouth, vitamin deficiencies, over-brushing your tongue, acidic drinks, hormonal imbalance, nerve damage, oral thrush, or medication side effects. Make an appointment with your dentist or doctor for a check-up to be sure. Until then, take good care of your mouth, avoid irritating foods and be patient. Your symptoms could last a few months. It’s also possible your symptoms will clear up on their own. You won’t know until you ask a specialist.
