Q: What are veneers?

A person matches colours for veneers to their teeth

Dental veneers are thin shells of porcelain or composite resin that are custom made to fit over your teeth. Dental veneers are permanent pieces of dental hardware used to fix teeth that are chipped, stained, worn down, uneven or abnormally spaced.

Veneers are made in a dental laboratory and customized so that they fit with your mouth shape and colour. Once made, the veneers are bonded to your teeth using resin cement. To bond them properly to your teeth, your dentist will remove a small amount of the tooth surface so that the resin can adhere properly to both the surface of your tooth and the veneer.

Dental veneers should be cleaned like your own teeth. Regular flossing and brushing will help keep them clean and remove food debris and other particles.

With proper care, dental veneers should last between 10 to 15 years. The length of time depends on the type of wear and damage that they receive. To keep them lasting for years, get checked regularly - they may need cosmetic repair or full replacement if they become damaged. Veneers, like regular teeth, can become damaged and cracked by biting down on hard foods and inedible items (like that stubborn shirt tag you can’t get off without scissors), and they can also become stained from repeatedly drinking coffee, wine, tea and other products.
