Q: Why Are Dental Hygienists So Important?

Our dental hygienists at Dental Image Therapy Centres, St. Vital location

Some say that life’s too short, so it’s best to spend it doing the things you love - like munching on your favourite foods. But to live life with a long and lasting smile, you need to brush and floss your teeth daily. And above all, you need to make sure to keep your appointments with your dental hygienist.

At Dental Image Therapy Centres, our dental hygienists are super important to us. We love our hygienists as much as we love teeth (and that’s a lot). This week’s Ask A Dentist blog features these amazing people, what they do and why dental hygiene is so important.

What Does A Dental Hygienist Do?

When we think about dental hygienists, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? They clean your teeth. But not just any cleaning, they give your teeth a deep clean which includes scaling, polishing and fluoride treatments. But, dental hygienists do so much more - they educate patients on their oral health and boost self-esteem through preventive and curative oral health care.

“It’s so rewarding to see someone’s smile improve and their confidence rise because of their mouth getting healthier after I remove the source of irritation,” said Cheryl, our dental hygienist from our Garden City Shopping Centre location.

Our hygienists also ensure you are safe and comfortable throughout your appointment. “I love a good smile, and I want to help people feel confident with theirs,” added Leah, who is also from our Garden City Shopping Centre dental clinic.

Don’t hesitate to ask us about our dental products and how those can improve your at-home hygiene routine. We’re happy to demonstrate the best brushing and flossing techniques to ensure that you properly care for your mouth.

Why Is Dental Hygiene Important?

“Dental hygiene is essential because we only get one set of adult teeth. Not only can our teeth be impacted, but our whole body,” explains Rachelle Gorospe from Garden City Shopping Centre. “If we start to neglect our teeth, we neglect our overall health. If you think about it, the bad bacteria in your mouth can travel throughout the body! There’s a link between oral health and systemic health.”

Good oral and dental hygiene can help prevent bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease. It’s especially important with COVID-19, where gum disease can increase the chance of worse symptoms. Making sure your teeth are healthy and happy can ultimately help you maintain that bright smile as you get older (and make sure you keep your original teeth!).

What’s Our Favourite Part Of Being A Hygienist?

We love our patients, they’re the best part of our day. May DeGuzman from our St. Vital Centre location puts it succinctly, “My patients. Seeing, treating, teaching and chatting with my patients.”

At our dental clinics, we value our patients’ oral health and overall well-being. We love helping you improve your oral health and hygiene routine. Above all, we care about you.

“I have seen generations of the same family. I enjoy hearing about their lives. And I love meeting new people,” said Lisa Eccles from our St. Vital Centre location. “Dental hygiene allows me to provide clinical therapy and suggestions for dental home care as well as get to know my patients through conversations. I am happy to help you achieve and maintain dental health.”

To Our Patients

We care about you - your comfort, well-being and safety. Arlene from our Garden City location says it best: “We are sensitive to your needs and we care about them.”

According to studies, 48 per cent to nearly 60 per cent of the population experiences a form of dental anxiety or extreme dental fear. There’s nothing to be afraid of. We promise. Don’t listen to what the research shows. We’ve got you covered to help you care for your gums and teeth (which can easily decline without visiting your dental hygienist).

At Dental Image Therapy Centres your safety and comfort are our top priority. “It's a great place with great people - both patients and coworkers,” said Melissa from the Garden City Shopping Centre dental clinic. “I and everyone here love helping people, to make them feel comfortable and safe. From the extra PPE that we’ve needed lately with COVID to just ensuring they’re feeling comfortable during appointments. We’re for them and are always listening.”

“Thank you for opening up your lives and allowing us to work with you to improve your health,” continues Andrée Lussier from St. Vital Centre. “Even though it’s part of our job to teach patients, we learn from them every day too, about life and more. It’s important to be kind - kindness is the most important therapy.”
