Q: Do I Need To Floss In The Morning?

A woman stretches in bed in the morning.

When is the best time to floss? Flossing in the morning isn’t entirely necessary if you don’t eat after your previous night’s cleaning.

When it becomes beneficial is after you’ve eaten breakfast. Flossing at this time gives bacteria less of a chance to form plaque. We actually recommend flossing throughout the day, especially if you notice something stuck between your teeth, not just in the morning. Cavities can quickly start if leftover food particles in your mouth aren't removed regularly, and the gums can also become irritated.

Even if you don’t floss in the morning, it’s good that you continue to brush. People have morning breath because bacteria proliferate overnight while you lack saliva in your mouth. Brushing helps minimize the impact of that bacteria.
