Q: Are there zero-waste options for my oral health?

Zero waste dental products like bamboo toothbrushes and powdered toothpaste.

Nowadays, being environmentally conscious is more than just a trend. Small differences in daily habits can add up. There are quite a few different ways to make these changes and have excellent oral hygiene.

Toothbrushes

At Dental Image Therapy Centres, we recommend that you change your toothbrush every three months to prevent bacteria growth on the bristles. Every month, thousands of toothbrushes end up in landfills. Switching to a bamboo toothbrush can help circumvent some of that waste. Bamboo toothbrushes have become more and more popular. These toothbrushes have less footprint and much easier to compost. At least the handles are. Before composting the toothbrush, remember to remove the nylon bristles.

Floss

Flossing your teeth is a vital part of your oral hygiene routine. Most flossing containers and flossing sticks are made from plastic. Dental floss tends to be made from synthetic materials too, like waxed nylon. The good news is that you can easily find zero-waste floss options. For example, dental floss made from biodegradable silk and packaged in a plastic-free refillable container.

Toothpaste

Brushing your teeth is impossible without toothpaste. But did you know that most recycling facilities can't recycle toothpaste tubes because they are made of multiple materials? But you can find zero-waste options, including toothpaste tablets, powder and jelly packaged in glass or aluminum containers. When you finish your eco-friendly toothpaste, you can take your jar and refill it in the bulk store or use it to store other things around the house.

These small steps to increase zero-waste efforts can make a small difference in helping to preserve the environment. So make these small, easy changes to reduce your waste and take care of your teeth and gums.
