Nobody wants to have bad breath. In fact, some studies have shown that bad breath is the third most common reason people seek out dental care, only trailing behind cavities and gum disease. It’s a source of anxiety for many, whether they suffer from it or not. And who can blame them? Having bad breath (also known as halitosis) can not only impact quality of life, but also the way you're perceived and treated by others.
While poor or irregular oral hygiene can definitely negatively affect your breath (up to 90% of bad breath cases originate in the mouth, after all), you may be surprised to learn that halitosis can start in the nose, sinuses, throat, stomach or even your lungs.
Bad breath from your lungs typically has one of two causes:
Acute respiratory conditions like pneumonia or bronchitis may only last a short while, but they can have a major impact on your breath while during that time. Infections in your sinuses and lungs are a common source of bad breath, especially in children.
While there isn’t much that can be done to eliminate bad odour while the infection runs its course, the good news is that once it goes away – either with time or antibiotics – the bad breath typically will as well. Just remember to keep up on your regular oral hygiene routine, even if you’re feeling under the weather.
In other cases, long-term chronic illnesses like lung cancer, cystic fibrosis or even asthma can be the cause of halitosis. Symptoms that arise from these illnesses (like dry mouth or increased mucus production) contribute to bacteria growth, which can worsen breath significantly if untreated.
For short-term or acute respiratory issues, time is the best cure, as the smell should go away as you start to feel better. But supplementing other prescribed care with warm water sinus rinses, allergy medication, antibiotics or regular hydration can go a long way, depending on the issue.
Remember though: Always discuss any health issues or treatment options with your doctor and/or dentist first.
