Q: Dr. Wu, Why Did You Decide To Become A Dentist?

Headshot of Dr. Wu

Dr. Michael Wu didn’t grow up with the best teeth. In fact, Dr. Wu never liked to smile and didn’t have much confidence in himself when he was younger. And, that’s why he became a dentist, so he can help those going through the same situation he did and allow them to leave the dental clinic feeling confident.

“I always had a strong interest in health care and helping others,” shared Dr. Wu. “I enjoy helping people. It was a hard decision between pharmacy and dentistry, but I felt a stronger sense of patient interaction in dentistry and it feels empowering to help change someone's smile and instill them with new confidence and happiness.”

On a mission to bring healthy smiles to patients, Dr. Wu completed a general Bachelor of Science and his Doctor in Dental Medicine degree from the University of Manitoba. Since joining our Garden City location in north west Winnipeg in May 2022, he’s been working hard to help patients improve their oral health one day at a time.

Joining Our Family

We’re super excited that Dr. Wu has joined our amazing team, and we’re glad he thinks so too.

“The whole clinic looks new and modern, feeling very private yet open at the same time,” he says. “Everyone here is incredibly friendly and helpful. The staff are all supportive and welcoming. There’s a vibe where it feels like the patient and staff are all one big family.”

When he’s not in the dental office boosting patients’ confidence, Dr. Wu’s an avid computer programmer and gamer with a great interest in board games and escape rooms where he gets to spend time with friends and family. He also loves learning new languages and is fluent in English with some Cantonese and Japanese and looking to pick up French again.

Advice To Patients

Dr. Wu believes prevention is the best treatment, and we strongly agree with him. Preventative dentistry helps maintain good oral health. It’s a combination of regular checkups and cleanings along with developing good oral habits like brushing and flossing regularly. Common preventative dentistry services include:

  • Regular oral exams, typically every six months
  • Professional teeth cleanings
  • Routine x-rays

“There’s nothing more important than prevention because once any part of healthy adult teeth is lost, there’s nothing that can be done to restore it to the same initial condition,” he explained. “We can only try to mimic it. Prevention is also the cheapest option, so please continue to visit your dental professional regularly.”

Dr. Wu is passionate about sharing his knowledge and helping patients instill excellent oral hygiene habits into their daily practice to ensure a lifetime of excellent dental and overall health.

“When I was a child, I never liked going to the dentist and found it very uncomfortable to have my teeth cleaned,” he says. “So, I understand where people are coming from with dental anxiety as I have also been in those shoes before. As a child, I never understood the link between oral health and overall health and I would love to be able to teach everyone the importance of good oral hygiene.”
