Ask a Dentist

Q: How much Halloween candy should I give my child?

Winnipeg dentist and anaesthesiologist Dr. Roland Debrouwere stands in a Dental Image Therapy Centre location.

In an ideal world, the answer would be no candy! However we know that’s not realistic, and everybody deserves a treat now and then - especially around Halloween.

Use your discretion, but generally one or two pieces a day is an adequate amount. As with consuming any sugary drink or treat, it’s important for your child to brush their teeth after eating their Halloween candy so the sugar doesn’t sit on the teeth and gums. When sugar sits on and in between the teeth it can cause cavities and plaque buildup.
