The earlier kids get used to a regular oral hygiene care routine the better. Here are 5 tips that you can use to get your kids interested in brushing their teeth (especially when they’ve reached the age when sitting on them just doesn’t work anymore):
- Brush your teeth with them. Kids love and learn from imitating you. If they see you brushing your teeth they will probably want to too. Make it a game. You both have to start and finish at the same time. This means that you’ll both be brushing for the recommended two minutes.Or have a tooth brushing dance party - the music will make the time fly by!
- Let them pick their own toothbrush and toothpaste. Next time you’re at the drug store or out grocery shopping, let them pick the toothbrush and toothpaste they want to use. This sense of ownership will encourage them to want to brush their teeth. Just make sure they’re picking a toothbrush that will fit their mouth and toothpaste made for kids. If they’re feeling overwhelmed, pick three yourself and let them choose one from that selection.
- Give them an award for brushing their teeth. An award chart, where they can place stickers for proper brushing can be a big deal, especially if they love stickers. It can also be as simple as being able to pick a bedtime story for you to read or giving them a big high-five for a job well done.
- Get a toothbrush for their toys. A child-sized toothbrush might be the perfect fit for their favourite stuffed toy. Encourage them to brush the toy’s teeth so that they can both have healthy and happy teeth.
- Make a routine and stick to it. Make sure brushing their teeth becomes a habit by ensuring that it happens every day - when they wake up and go to bed. If it’s a routine, they’ll expect it or even look forward to it.
