Parents-to-be have a lot on their minds. Between doctor’s appointments, nutrition concerns, home renovations and all the other things to prepare for, it can be overwhelming to say the least. But, if you’re pregnant, it’s important that you don’t neglect your own oral health – especially your gums – while you’re preparing for the arrival of your little one.
Research has shown that hormone changes during pregnancy can significantly affect oral health. These changes can increase the risk of gingivitis, which can, if left untreated, progress to periodontitis (or gum disease). Gum disease is a chronic infection in the gums, typically caused by a long-term buildup of dental plaque (a sticky, hard-to-remove film of bacteria on the surface of your teeth). While up to 80% of Canadians will be affected by gum disease at some point in their lives, there are additional reasons to be careful when you’re pregnant.
According to the Canadian Dental Association, periodontal disease increases the chance of delivering a premature low birth-weight baby by up to seven times. While the risk increases based on the severity of the disease, even minimal signs of gum disease are enough to increase the likelihood of negative outcomes. Researchers have identified two potential causes for this increased risk:
Fortunately, gum disease is very preventable with a regular and comprehensive oral health routine that includes brushing twice a day for two minutes at a time, cleaning between your teeth regularly and visiting your dentist every six months for a cleaning and checkup.
Another issue to look out for during pregnancy is exposure to stomach acid from morning sickness. Stomach acid can leave teeth weak and susceptible to tooth decay, erosion and bacteria, in turn increasing the risk of gum disease. Remember, if you do vomit, rinse your mouth immediately with water and ensure you wait 30 minutes before brushing your teeth to allow your teeth to remineralize and harden.
