Q: What is the teeth cleaning process?

A Winnipeg Dentist performs a cleaning on a dental patient at a Dental Image Therapy Centre location.

The cleaning process starts with a physical exam of your mouth: checking around teeth and gums for signs of gingivitis or other potential concerns. With a small mirror to guide them, the dental hygienist then uses a periodontal scaler (a thin tool) to remove the plaque and tartar above and below your gum line and between your teeth. The more buildup there is, the more they’ll need to work on a particular spot.

Next, your teeth get polished with a gritty toothpaste and high-powered electric brush. It’s a great way to smooth the teeth and reduce surface staining. This is followed by an expert flossing session that ensures removal of debris between the teeth.  Read our post that explains why your gums bleed sometimes when you floss.

The last step is rinsing with a fluoride treatment for a minute. This helps strengthen the enamel and fight against cavities.
