Q: Why do I have a toothache after getting a filling?

Two Winnipeg Dentists sit beside a patient in a dental chair before they fill a cavity.

It is common to experience some pain or sensitivity in the treated tooth after getting a filling for a cavity. Usually, the toothache will go away after a few days. The pain could be a reaction to the process of repairing the tooth, or you might be feeling some discomfort because the filling itself needs to be adjusted.

It is important to remember that deeper decay requires more work to remove so it can take longer for the tooth to heal. Even though the tooth may not have bothered you before the work was done, it is still necessary to repair the decay as leaving it will ultimately result in progression of the cavity and eventual loss of the tooth.

If it has been a week since your filling and you are still feeling pain when you bite down, eat or open your mouth — schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Call us or schedule an appointment online to see one of our Winnipeg dentists so they can correct the issue.
