Q: Why are my teeth so sensitive?

Having sensitive teeth can make an enjoyable activity a lot less fun. Going out to eat at local Winnipeg restaurants with family and friends can become a chore, sometimes the very air (if it’s cold enough) can cause an uncomfortable situation.

Tooth sensitivity generally stems from your gum line receding or your enamel and cementum (the protective layers on your teeth) becoming worn away or damaged. When these situations happen, your dentin is exposed. Dentin contains microscopic canals, where fluid flows around the nerves of your tooth. This fluid is affected by heat and cold, causing your nerves to react with sensitivity and pain.

You can wear away your enamel and cementum by eating and drinking foods with high acidity, brushing your teeth too aggressively, or overusing teeth whitening products. There are a few things you can try to reduce sensitivity issues:

  • Rinsing your mouth after meals
  • Using a soft-bristled toothbrush
  • Using desensitizing toothpaste

Having extremely sensitive teeth (hypersensitivity) may be a sign of an underlying problem that has exposed more of your dentin layer. Hypersensitivity is most likely caused by tooth decay, worn fillings or fractured teeth. It’s important to get regular checkups with your dentist to assess your oral health.

If you haven’t seen a dentist in the last six months, book an appointment today to see what might be the underlying cause of your sensitive teeth at either of our Winnipeg locations: St. Vital Centre and Garden City Shopping Centre.
