Q: I have periodontitis. How can it be treated?

Dr. Bryan DiMarco performing a dental treatment

Unlike gingivitis, periodontitis cannot be reversed.

We are fortunate to live in the era we are in now, where there are dentistry innovations that provide treatments to what used to be extremely challenging and impossible dental cases.

Here at Dental Image Therapy Centres, we’re here to provide knowledge and support about periodontitis and other dental issues to ensure our patients’ procedures go smoothly and as comfortably as possible.

How Do You Get Periodontitis?

We will always have your health top of mind. Part of this is to encourage proper dental hygiene through regular checkups and cleanings. And we’ll always take the time to teach you how to take care of your teeth and gums at home, with proper brushing and flossing techniques and general care tips and tricks.

So, what happens when proper oral hygiene is not observed?

It depends, everyone is different, but poor oral hygiene leads to unhealthy gums and teeth more often than not. This may then eventually lead to gingivitis, when a person’s gums are swollen and dark red, and bleed easily.

If left untreated, gingivitis may progress to periodontitis with a possibility of tooth loss.

Periodontitis Treatment Options

Depending on the severity and complexity of the condition, the treatment will vary from person to person. Here are the different treatment options we offer at our dental clinic:

  • Scaling and root planing: For less serious periodontitis treatments, scaling and root planing may be recommended by your dentist. Scaling is when tartar and bacteria are removed from your mouth with the use of hand instruments, a laser or an ultrasonic instrument. After scaling, root planing follows. Root planing is when your dentist smooths the rough areas on your teeth’s root surfaces preventing bacteria build-up.
  • Surgical treatments: For advanced periodontitis, surgical treatments may be necessary.
