Q: What Are The Common Questions We Get About Dentures?

Dentures are one of the best replacements for missing teeth and restoring one’s smile. Depending on the condition of your teeth, you may be fitted with a partial or complete set. Partial dentures are removable metal frameworks that are fitted to the natural teeth. Full dentures replace all of the upper or lower teeth.

If you’re considering getting dentures but don’t know where to start, check out the most frequently asked questions we get about dentures.

I Need Dentures. Where Do I Begin?

The best way to start your dental journey is to see your dentist and discuss treatment options. They will determine if false teeth are suited to your dental situation.

How Long Do Dentures Last?

Over time, your dentures need to be relined, remade or rebased due to wear. Your mouth also naturally changes as you age. These changes can cause your dentures to loosen, make chewing difficult or irritate your gums. You should visit your dentist at least every six months for a routine dental checkup.

How Do I Care For My Dentures?

Like your natural teeth, your dentures’ lifespan depends on your oral health routine. At home, make sure to clean your dentures with a toothbrush and a denture cleaner made specifically for cleaning dentures. A dental professional may also instruct you to soak your dentures in a water-based cleaning solution overnight. Cleaning your dentures daily to remove plaque and food debris will minimize staining and keep your mouth healthy.

Do you clean your dentures regularly but still have bad breath and red sores? Find out why in our Ask A Dentist blog.

Can I Sleep In My Dentures?

We recommend that you remove your dentures at night to give your mouth a chance to relax from the pressure of wearing dentures during the day. Wearing dentures at night can irritate the tissue in your mouth and potentially lead to fungus growth.

Can I Eat Normally With Dentures?

Most patients take a while to get used to their dentures. After a while, you should be able to eat comfortably and be more confident eating hard and sticky foods. You can use a small amount of denture adhesive to stabilize the dentures and hold them in place while you get accustomed to chewing with them.
