Q: What Do I Need To Know About Tongue Thrusting?

Dental Image Therapy Centres offer a wide range of orthodontic treatments, such as Invisalign. Our goal is to provide excellent oral care and give our patients the smile they deserve. We want to help you overcome any harmful dental habits you may have. One example of a detrimental habit is tongue thrusting.

What Is Tongue Thrusting?

Tongue thrusting occurs when the tongue pushes forward against the upper and lower teeth, resulting in an abnormal bite. This condition is most common in young children. Tongue thrusting happens naturally when babies are breastfed or bottle-fed. It lasts about six months and can prevent babies from choking.

But, when tongue thrusting continues to persist in toddlers and children, it can lead to serious issues such as:

  • A child’s tongue sticking out during speaking, swallowing and resting
  • Speech problems
  • A prolonged sucking problem
  • Issues with chewing properly
  • Displaced teeth that may require orthodontic treatment

What Causes Tongue Thrusting?

Everyone’s experience with tongue thrusting varies. Several potential causes for tongue thrusting include:

  • Finger sucking or pacifier use for an extended time
  • Obstruction in the upper airway
  • An open bite or missing teeth
  • Weak oral muscle strength or tone
  • Genetics

How To Fix Tongue Thrust?

As a parent, you don’t have to consult a dentist about tongue thrusting in an infant, but there are some signs to look for in older children. Some symptoms to look out for are tongue resting in the wrong position, prolonged sucking, open resting lips and difficulty chewing food. If your older child shows any of these symptoms, take them to see a dental professional.

A dentist can get your child fitted for a mouthguard. Your child might only need to wear one for a few hours during the day and night. In some cases, your dentist may recommend oral or speech therapy for your child to train them to use their mouth and tongue correctly.
