Q: What Is Fluoride Treatment?

Cavities and tooth decay can be painful, and they’re among one of the world’s most common health problems, according to Mayo Clinic. Because of this, our dental professionals highly recommend fluoride treatments to prevent these issues.

What Is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in rocks, soil, water and air. It helps rebuild tooth enamel and reverse signs of tooth decay. Most Manitoba water sources put a small amount of fluoride in drinking water to prevent tooth decay. It’s also in your toothpaste, mouthwash and food supplements.

Why You Should Get Fluoride Treatment

About 60 to 90 per cent of children and nearly 100 per cent of adults worldwide have had tooth decay. Tooth decay can be caused by:

  • Tooth location - Since your back teeth have more grooves, crannies and roots, they’re harder to clean, which can cause tooth decay.
  • Frequent snacking or sipping - When you’re frequently consuming food or drinks, there’s more opportunity for the bacteria in your mouth to produce acids that can attack your teeth.
  • Inadequate brushing - Plaque should be brushed away after eating or drinking, or there will be a greater risk of tooth decay.
  • Dry mouth - If you experience dry mouth, you lack saliva that helps rinse food and plaque from your mouth and teeth. Food that stays stuck in your teeth can erode the tooth and cause tooth decay.
  • Worn fillings - Dental fillings wear and weaken throughout the years, causing them to break down or form rough edges. This can cause plaque to build up.

Heartburn - Heartburn occurs when stomach acid flows backward into the mouth. Acids wear away the enamel on your teeth, making them more susceptible to tooth decay.

Fluoride treatments help prevent tooth decay by making your enamel more resistant to acids. It helps build up healthy minerals in your enamel, which slows or stops the decay.

What To Expect When You Get Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride treatments are done during your regular dentist appointment, and they’re quick and easy. A dentist or dental hygienist will paint your teeth with fluoride varnish. That’s it! And you’ll be able to eat and drink again in no time.

Fluoride treatments give you that extra boost of protection. Book an appointment with Dental Image Therapy Centres to see if you need additional fluoride treatments. We’re conveniently located at St. Vital Centre and Garden City Shopping Centre.
