Q: Why Do I Have Buck Teeth?

Buck teeth (also known as an overbite or malocclusion) happen when the upper jaw overlaps with the lower jaw. People may or may not want to treat this problem but, according to our previous Ask A Dentist blog, extreme buck teeth can cause headaches, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and uneven wear on the teeth if left untreated.

Buck teeth are more than just cosmetic concerns and naturally, parents want to prevent their children from developing them. Identifying the cause of the overbite will allow you to prevent it from worsening. So, what causes buck teeth?

Tongue Thrusting Against Teeth

The American Association of Pediatric Dentistry says if the tongue is thrust against the teeth for short periods of time, it may not affect the positioning of the teeth. But, if it’s pushed against the teeth constantly, it can result in an overbite or protruding teeth.

Sucking Your Thumb

Buck teeth from thumbsucking is a common dental problem in children, according to the American Dental Association. Children typically stop sucking their thumb between two and four years old or when the permanent front teeth erupt. If they don't, parents may need to deter their behaviour.

Some ways to discourage thumbsucking are:

  • Praising their little one for going a while without thumbsucking
  • Finding other soothing methods if the child uses thumbsucking to help curb anxiety. These methods could include facing those fears one step at a time or practicing deep breathing to calm down.
  • Involving them in choosing ways to stop (works best for older children)

If these tips don’t work, consult an orthodontist for proper guidance and treatment to prevent further complications. They might suggest bandaging their thumbs or even prescribe a bitter medicinal coating as a deterrent.

Natural Alignment

The U.S. National Library of Medicine affirms that overbites are often hereditary. In this case, there’s not much parents can do to prevent this condition. But, you can fix buck teeth by discussing a treatment plan with your dentist.

Traditional braces or aligners such as Invisalign are the most common treatments for buck teeth. Children or adults with buck teeth can benefit from this orthodontic treatment. If the overbite is too severe for orthodontics, jaw surgery may be prescribed.

Like people, teeth come in all shapes and sizes. Buck teeth only require treatment if they’re severe or cause you discomfort. You could fix your overbite if you’re unsatisfied with your appearance, but some choose to embrace them - like rock legend Freddie Mercury.
