Q: What Should I Do To Prepare For My Cavity Filling?

Oral checkup with mirror

Eating your favourite foods should be enjoyable, but sudden sensitivity to hot or cold foods or drinks could be a sign of a tooth problem. It could mean that you need a filling, a common dental procedure.

Most people need at least one filling in their life to fix a damaged tooth and help prevent further decay. You can learn more about the different types of dental fillings in our previous Ask A Dentist blog

If you have a dental filling appointment coming up, knowing what to expect can help ease your nerves during this simple procedure.

The Cavity Filling Procedure

Before the procedure, the dentist will numb the area using a local anesthetic to ease any discomfort. First, your dentist will remove the decay in your tooth and clean the affected area. Then, your dentist will prepare the tooth for the filling and fill your tooth with the filling material. If you are scared of the dentist or have dental anxiety, let us know and we’ll help you work through it.

After The Procedure

Remember to follow the aftercare instructions for a quick recovery. Some people experience soreness or sensitivity in their teeth after the filling. Usually, the sensitivity fades within a few days. Avoid eating hard or sticky foods straight after the procedure as it can dislodge the filling.

Feel free to contact your dentist for a follow-up if the tenderness or soreness persist for more than a week. Your dentist will adjust the filling to fit better. If you’re fine after the procedure but begin to experience pain or discomfort days, weeks or months later, it’s always a good idea to check in with your dentist to make sure there aren’t any underlying issues.

Fillings don’t last forever, so visiting your dentist for a checkup is a great way to make sure nothing is wrong with your teeth, in some cases, your old fillings may need to be replaced. Your regular checkup and cleaning is the perfect time to make sure your previous fillings are working well so you can continue eating the foods you love.

Avoiding The Procedure

To avoid getting fillings in the future, follow these oral health tips:

  • Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush
  • Floss everyday
  • Limit sugar and snacks from your diet
  • Avoid tobacco
  • Visit your dentist regularly to prevent tooth decay from worsening

Doing all these can help you get back to smiling with confidence and enjoying your favourite foods.
