Q: How Can I Improve My Gum Health?

An important factor in keeping your mouth healthy is maintaining healthy gums. Healthy gums support healthy teeth and they also play a significant role in our overall health. If you neglect your gums, you’ll start to notice plaque buildup around, on and between your teeth. If plaque isn’t removed properly it can lead to gum disease and tooth sensitivity. Gum disease, when left untreated, can lead to tooth loss.

Ways To Keep Gums Healthy

To avoid these oral health issues, the best way to improve and protect your gum health is to practice daily oral hygiene. An optimal dental care routine should include:

Eating Habits

What you eat affects your teeth and gums. Different foods can positively or negatively impact your gum health.

Some foods that you should add to your diet are:

  • high-fibre fruits and vegetables to help clean out the mouth
  • black and green teas to help reduce bacteria
  • dairy products, such as milk, cheese, and yogurt, to strengthen your enamel and reduce the acidity in your mouth
  • foods that contain fluoride, including water, as well as some poultry and seafood products

It’s best to avoid these food and beverages:

  • carbonated soft drinks that contain phosphoric, citric acids and sugar
  • alcohol, as it can dry out your mouth
  • sticky candies and sweets that stay on your teeth
  • starchy foods that can stick on and between the teeth

Signs Of Unhealthy Gums

If you experience any of the below symptoms, you should visit your dental professional for treatment as these are the signs that your gums are unwell:

There are many ways to keep your gums happy and they all start with a good oral hygiene routine at home. But you should still visit your dentist every six months as gum disease can be sneaky. Even with optimal oral hygiene, you can still be at risk for gum disease.
